Radiation Oncology

Equipment

The Radiation Oncology department is equipped with two Varian linear accelerators, which produce high energy X-rays (photons) and electrons for treatment.

Our newest linear accelerator is the Varian Clinac 21 EX Silhouette, a state-of-the-art machine and the only one of its kind in California. Its many features include Multi-leaf Collimator-internalized shielding, enhanced dynamic wedges and IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy) capabilities. The treatment can be precisely tailored for each patient.

The two machines offer three different photon x-ray energies and six electron energies. Some treatments for more superficial lesions are given on a lower energy photon machine called "orthovoltage."
