  • Developed second-generation balloon angioplasty now commonly used worldwide.
  • Invented and developing the Simpson Directional Coronary AtheroCath (DCA) procedure to remove vascular blockages.
  • Participated in coronary stenting clinical trials.
  • Participated in the first U.S. trial using distal protection (PercuSurge) when intervening in Saphenous vein coronary bypass grafts.
  • Successfully performed the first and ongoing Septal Ablation for Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy on the West Coast.
  • Developed the "Perclose" suturing device for closing femoral arteries after cardiac catheterization that greatly enhances patient comfort and reduces complications.
  • Managed many drug trials for acute myocardial infraction and coronary intervention.
